Today we want to tell you some secrets, so you can travel the world without going broke. First, we want to break some news: While traveling, you will spend less money than when you live in one place! We know it sounds weird but trust us, it is truly possible.
Of course, this will all depend on your way of traveling. If your wish is to experience the lifestyle of the rich and the famous it will for sure be more expensive but, if you want to get to know as many places as possible in a short amount of time, we guarantee you it could be cheaper than living a “regular life”. We will leave you here these next tips:
1) Stay in hostels
Not only is a much fun experience but, the concept of hostels is designed so people can travel without spending that much money. A bed in a normal hotel can cost you a lot of money and a hotel won´t have the cool atmosphere a youth hostel can provide. The normal clients in a hostel are fun backpackers just like yourself traveling the world on a budget so, it is also a way of collecting tips, anecdotes and making cool friends along the way.
2) Choose cheap destinations
Choose countries in which the normal expenses like food, accommodation and transportation are cheap and convenient for you, especially if it´s the first time you travel. The first stage of your trip is where you will spend more money, the inexperience makes us take decisions or buy things that are unnecessary. Once you have spent a lot of time travelling you will learn how to save money even in the most expensive places.
3) Travel with cheap airlines, do stop overs, find alternative routes
Especially in Europe and Asia, there are a lot of low-cost airlines that let us travel big distances, even whole continents at very reasonable prices. You just have to remember that these airlines have very strict rules about luggage, so be very careful with the size and weight of your hand luggage, making a mistake with this can cost a lot of money. Also, booking a flight with stop overs or routes that are not so popular can cheapen your trip.
4) Spend more time in each place
One of the most frequent expense you will have as a traveler is transportation, moving from one place to the other could turn into q big waste of money. That´s why we recommend you to spend more time in each place, walk, use a bike or rent a cheap motorcycle to go around the cities. This can translate into a big save of money.
Also, there are some websites and apps very useful for travelers. Mostly the idea is to share a ride with someone in their own cars. The most commons are Blablacar and carpooling. Is not only a way to save money but, also to meet cool locals.
5) Meet Locals
Without a doubt they will be the best source of knowledge about the place that you are visiting and the best to give you the tips about cheap supermarkets, stores, free shows, what to visit for free. You can get an inner view of the place and enjoy it as a local. There is no better experience than this.
6) Buy your clothes in a second-hand shop
Unless you are planning on spending 6 months in the Amazonia, go to the Himalayas or travelling for months in a bike, you don´t need and specific outfit. For a trip just going around cities and small towns you can wear pretty much anything. Of course, there will be times when you might need a big coat, socks or winter clothes. But, for the times with good weather any normal outfit will be enough. For these kinds of trips, you don´t need either very expensive backpacks or expensive gear like a compass. Forget about all of that unless, as we write at the beginning, you are doing a very specific adventure.
For all the casual, normal clothes and even equipment you can always shop in second hand stores where even other travelers like yourself have left their things after they finished their trip. It a great way to save a lot of money.
So, what are you waiting for? We have shown you that there are a lot of ways of saving money while traveling so just pack and take the risk.
